Open Source Products
Enthought supports open source software development through financial, infrastructure, and intellectual property investments in a variety of open source initiatives:
- We are committed to publishing a large amount of our code as open source.
See the Enthought Tool Suite, available under a BSD-style license.
- We support SciPy, an open source library of scientific tools for Python.
In addition to hosting the SciPy website and mailing lists, we sponsor the annual SciPy conference, and many of our staff are major source contributors.
- We also support and participate in the maintenance of NumPy.
NumPy was initially developed primarily by Travis Oliphant with major contributions from Robert Kern. We continue to provide organizational and developmental support.
- We champion the use of Python and offer guidance and support to the Python community.
We're a sponsor member of the Python Software Foundation, sponsor the PyCon conference, and host several Python User Groups:
Enthought both publishes code as open source and uses open source tools where appropriate in our business. We do this because we believe that open source software enables us to provide greater value to our customers than we could by using and producing only proprietary tools. The open source development model draws on the expertise of a broad base of users and developers to continuously improve the software, whether developed here or elsewhere. Publishing code as open source provides security of maintenance to our customers, and demonstrates our level of technical competence. It also supports the greater good by putting scientific software tools within reach of academic users and users in developing economies who may lack the budget for proprietary tools.
