Drilling for oil requires accurately predicting the fluid pressure in the drilled rock. If the drillers do not counteract the pressure correctly, flammable oil may surge up the well and cause a blowout on the surface, damaging the oil rig and risking lives. Alternatively, oil or gas may seep into other strata and become unrecoverable. Marine oil drilling is an expensive operation, and the downtime caused by even a non-damaging blowout can threaten the viability of a well. In order to apply the appropriate counter-pressure, the drilling planners need to predict the fluid pressure at depth by incorporating seismic data, logs from nearby wells, and modeling. A software solution needs to be flexible to accommodate models and methods from the latest research.


Usually, the user has a collection of 1D well log data for the well. Using the 1D data, CoPEG interpolates the pressure for the depth of the existing well. Using data from one or more wells and seismic data for a 2D line or 3D cube, CoPEG can predict the pressure at any point in the data space. Data can be viewed via a 1D log viewer, 2D cross section viewer and 3D map view, often at the same time. For example, 1D well logs and 3D horizons can be viewed overlaid on a 2D cross section.
